Rose care in summer

Healthy roses start with choosing the variety and location. With our tips you will learn everything about caring for roses in summer and how you can enjoy the magnificent garden plants.

Caring for roses in summer

Do you love lush rose petals with a delicate fragrance? With a little care and the right knowledge about the robust wood, caring for the roses is not difficult. In this blog you will find out what needs to be considered when caring for roses in summer.

The path to healthy roses begins with the choice of location, because healthy roses in particular develop natural defenses against pests and diseases and delight with an indescribable abundance of flowers.

The optimal location for your roses should be:

  • be sunny and warm (a rule of thumb is at least 5 hours of sun).
  • be airy, because stagnant heat leads to leaf damage and creates ideal conditions for spider mites and powdery mildew. Locations with poor air circulation favor infestation with fungal diseases.

rich in humus and nutrients, deep and without waterlogging. Our tip: If you have already planted roses in locations with less than ideal conditions, it is important to improve the location and strengthen the plants. With Kölle’s Beste Rosen-Erde and Kölle Bio-Root-Power you give your treasures the support they need for lush growth. Read more about caring for roses in our care tips .

With the right pruning , you keep your rose plants in shape and also actively prevent fungal diseases . The foliage on plants that are too dense does not dry well and is therefore more susceptible to diseases. The actual pruning takes place in March and serves to build up the plant. Here too thin shoots are removed.

In summer, faded flowers are regularly removed by pruning , the flowering shoot is cut back to the first fully developed leaf. You can recognize this leaf by the five to seven pinnate leaves instead of three. On roses that flower in umbels, break off just the single faded flower and only cut back once the entire umbel has faded.

Our tip: Use sharp scissors for the cut , this is the only way to get a clean cut. This measure prevents infections at the interface. For your protection, it is best to wear gloves when cutting roses .

In some cases, shoots grow from the grafting point, which differ from the other shoots in their foliage. You should tear off these so-called wild shoots at the point where they sprout , not cut them off. If wild shoots are not removed, they can become so strong over time that the noble variety is crowded out.

Our tip: Wild shoots differ from the other shoots in their foliage and spines and are therefore easily recognizable.

Only healthy and vigorous roses can fully develop their beauty. In addition to an even water supply , sufficient nutrients are also necessary for the best growth and lush flowering . Roses are heavy feeders and are therefore best supplied with a special rose fertilizer . This contains all the important nutrients and is optimally tailored to the needs of the queen of gardens. This strengthens the resistance of the plants, prevents symptoms of deficiency and a second, possibly even a third bloom is possible.

buy fertilizer

Our tip: Use Kölle’s Beste Rosen fertilizer for the first fertilization in spring and Kölle organic natural fertilizer with a reduced content of phosphate and potassium for subsequent fertilization in June/July. In this way you ensure an optimal supply of nutrients for your roses, promote healthy growth and garden in harmony with nature in an ecological way. For plants that need special care, use Kölle’s Beste Pflanzen-Vital every 10 to 14 days . The power fertilizer with iron improves the plant’s own immune system and ensures lush green leaves. Treat your garden treasures to this pampering treatment and use this revitalizing elixir.

water supply

With ideal soil conditions and professional planting, rose roots penetrate deep into the soil and form a well-branched root system. This ensures the roses have a supply of water and nutrients from the soil. Rose plants that have been at their location for a number of years can also survive phases without precipitation, but the perennial plants need help
• in dry locations (when rain has difficulty getting to the roots)
• on light soil with little humus content
• in the 1st and 2nd th year immediately after planting

buy irrigation

Our tip: Water regularly in the event of prolonged drought or freshly planted roses. It is important that you give approx. 10 to 15 liters of water per plant , because with smaller amounts the water does not reach the roots and only wets the upper layer of soil. This so-called «penetrating watering» is highly dependent on the quality of the soil, but can be done once a week in a hot summer. To minimize evaporation, ideally water the plants early in the morning . If possible, no water should get on the leaves or flowers, but only directly on the plant.

Roses complement each other with sage, catnip, lavender and much more. In a simple way, you offer the natural opponents of animal pests a habitat and set the course for keeping the lush rose bushes healthy.

The two most common problems with roses and what to do about them

Despite the ideal location, sufficient fertilization and watering, preventive plant strengthening and selected varieties, your roses may need your help. In addition to aphids, the most common problems are fungal diseases.

The leaves have black spots on the leaf surface . Leaves close to the ground are particularly affected in cold, wet weather. The infected leaves weaken the plant. If infested, the affected leaves are removed and disposed of with household waste. It is important that as little moisture as possible gets onto the leaves . With Kölle Bio Plant Treatment , the plant is strengthened and natural protection is created. With regular use, fungicide treatments are not necessary.

powdery mildew

There is a white coating on the leaves and on the tips of the shoots that is easy to wipe off. Above all, powdery mildew occurs in warm summers with cool nights. The leaves turn brown and fall off. It is important to collect the leaves thoroughly and cut back the affected shoots . In addition, regular treatment with Kölle Bio Aktiv means for plants susceptible to mildew and fungi strengthens the rose bushes.
