The most important tips for October

1.Now is the best time to plant roses, perennials, hedges and all other shrubs. 2.Container plants are protected from frost and brought to the winter quarters. 3.Last lawn cut. Plant now for spring! Autumn bulbs develop best if planted early .

With heather plants you extend the summer. Choose from a wide range of colours, sizes and varieties and enjoy the robust bud bloomers that are so special among the heather.

The bulbs of dahlias, gladioli and canna, which are sensitive to cold, are pulled out of the ground before the first frost. Cut off the green a hand’s breadth above the bulb and store the spring bulbs in a cool, dark and frost-free place. From the end of April, the summer-blooming beauties can go back into the garden.

Remove wilted and diseased leaves from rose plants and dispose of them with the general waste. A pruning takes place only in the spring. New rose plantings are ideal now. Harvest your quinces only when the fruit loses its downy coating and reveals a shiny yellow skin. An unripe green quince is bland and lacks flavor.

Thoroughly remove the fallen fruit. In this way you reduce the risk of infection for fungal diseases and deprive mice of the food basis. Especially in dry years, an enormous increase in field mice and voles is to be expected. These damage the roots of fruit trees in winter.

Herb and vegetable garden

Celeriac, parsnip, beetroot and carrot growth is complete. You should harvest the valuable root vegetables before the first frost. Ideal storage conditions are frost-free and at temperatures below 10 °C.

Cut off the main stem of Brussels sprouts. This improves the growth of the florets and limits growth in length.

Are you planning to plant an asparagus bed in the coming year ? Then it is important that the ground is now dug deep. You should not dig up the rest of the garden. Contrary to earlier gardener mania, loosening with a digging fork in spring is sufficient. Digging up messes up valuable soil structures and is more likely to cause damage.

Kale should only be harvested after the first frost. Most varieties get a milder aroma from low temperatures.

Spices that are sensitive to cold, such as basil, lemongrass and lemon verbena, must be brought indoors for the winter. Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, lavender and thyme are protected at lower temperatures with brushwood or winter protection fleece.

In order for your amaryllis to bloom by Christmas, it is important that you pot the bulb now. A maximum of half the onion can be potted. Stretch a pond net over your garden pond before the leaves fall and save yourself a lot of trouble. Leaves do not end up in the pond and can be easily removed from the net.

Pond pumps and filters are removed before the first frost and stored frost-free in a bucket with water. A basement is ideal for this. Pumps that are stored dry break down more quickly and the plastic seals become brittle and porous.

Remove frost-sensitive pond plants from the pond and store them in a bright and frost-free place over the winter.

Pond plants are cut back only a little in autumn. This ensures gas exchange even in winter. The actual pruning takes place in the spring.
